What to Plant in a Raised Bed When You Only Have a Small Backyard

A small backyard can still grow a useful amount of food if you choose crops that earn their space. The goal is not to plant everything. The goal is to plant what you will actually harvest and use.

Start with herbs

Herbs are some of the best crops for small raised beds because a little goes a long way. Basil, parsley, cilantro, chives, thyme, oregano, and dill can make home cooking feel more rewarding without taking over the bed.

Grow cut-and-come-again greens

Leaf lettuce, arugula, spinach, kale, and Swiss chard can be harvested a few leaves at a time. This gives you repeat harvests instead of one single crop. In a compact bed, repeat harvests are more valuable than plants that take months and produce once.

Choose compact fruiting crops

Tomatoes and peppers can work in small beds if you choose varieties carefully and give them support. Compact, determinate, or patio-type tomatoes are easier to manage than large sprawling plants. Peppers stay relatively tidy and pair well with herbs and greens.

Use quick crops between slower crops

Radishes, baby lettuce, scallions, and small greens can grow while larger plants are still young. This helps you use open soil early in the season without overcrowding later.

Calendula, nasturtiums, alyssum, and marigolds can bring pollinators and color. In a small yard, flowers make the bed look intentional and can support a healthier garden environment.
