Good drainage is one of the biggest advantages of raised bed gardening. When water can move through the soil instead of sitting around the roots, vegetables grow stronger and are less likely to struggle with rot, disease, or slow growth.

But a raised bed can still become too wet if it is placed in the wrong spot, filled with heavy soil, or watered too often. Here is how raised garden bed drainage works and how to prevent soggy soil.

Why drainage matters

Plant roots need both water and oxygen. When soil stays waterlogged, the air spaces between soil particles fill with water. Roots can suffocate, beneficial soil life slows down, and some plants start to yellow or wilt even though the soil is wet.

Common signs of poor drainage include:

  • Soil stays wet for days after rain.
  • Plants wilt even when the bed is moist.
  • Leaves turn yellow from the bottom up.

Open-bottom beds help water escape

Mulch is useful for both drainage and moisture control. A layer of straw, shredded leaves, or untreated organic mulch helps reduce surface crusting and keeps soil from drying too quickly after watering.

In wet weather, keep mulch loose and avoid piling it against plant stems. Airflow still matters.

What to do if your bed is already soggy

If your raised bed is staying wet, start with the simplest fixes:

  • Stop watering until the top few inches dry out.
  • Gently loosen the top layer with a hand fork.
  • Move mulch aside temporarily to let the soil breathe.
  • Check whether runoff is entering the bed from nearby surfaces.
  • Add compost or aerating material before the next planting cycle.

If the location is the main issue, you may need to redirect water around the bed or choose a better spot for the next raised bed.

Drainage in Canadian gardens

In colder climates, drainage is especially important in spring. Snowmelt and cold rain can keep soil wet before roots are actively growing. Raised beds help by lifting the growing area above the surrounding ground, but placement still matters.
