One of the best things about a raised garden bed is how much you can grow in a small space — and how the growing season can stretch from early spring all the way to late fall with the right plant choices.
Here’s a quick seasonal guide to help you plan your raised bed throughout the year.
Spring (April – May)
Cool-season crops thrive as soon as the soil warms up. Start with lettuce, spinach, kale, arugula, radishes, peas, and herbs like cilantro and parsley.
Summer (June – August)
Warm-season crops take over. Plant tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, zucchini, basil, and strawberries. These need full sun and consistent watering.
Fall (September – October)
As temperatures drop, switch back to cool-season crops. Kale, Swiss chard, beets, carrots, and garlic all do well in fall and can handle light frost.
Winter (November – March)
In most of Canada, the bed rests — but you can use this time to add compost, prep soil, and plan next year’s layout.
More plants need more space — give them room to grow.
