Raised beds do not make pests disappear, but they can make prevention easier. Because the growing area has clear edges, you can add barriers, inspect plants faster, and keep the garden cleaner.
Start below the bed if needed
If your area has burrowing animals, hardware cloth under the bed is much easier to install before filling. Choose a sturdy mesh and secure it so roots can still grow while larger pests are blocked.
Use row cover early
Lightweight row cover can protect seedlings from insects, birds, and rough weather during the most vulnerable stage. Remove or lift covers when crops need pollination, or use them for leafy greens that do not need pollinators.
Keep edges clean
Long grass, fallen leaves, and clutter around the bed can give pests places to hide. A clean path around the raised bed makes it easier to spot problems early.
Healthy plants resist pressure better
Good spacing, steady watering, and healthy soil do not replace pest control, but they reduce plant stress. Stressed plants are often the first to struggle when insects arrive. A few simple habits can prevent many small problems from becoming a season-long fight.
